March 17, 2010

At our club's meeting on March 11, 2010 the following announcements were given:

*      The 12th Annual Maui Heart Walk is scheduled for 3/27.  The walk starts at 8:00 am at Keopuolani Park.  For additional information please contact the American Heart Association at 244-7185 or via email at Kauwela.Bisquera@heart.org.

Our Guest Speaker was Russell Sparks - Education Specialist from The Division of Aquatic Resources - Department of Land and Natural Resources.  The Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) manages the state's aquatic resources and ecosystems through programs in commercial fisheries and resource enhancement; aquatic resources protection, habitat enhancement, and education; and recreational fisheries. Major program areas include projects to manage or enhance fisheries for long-term sustainability of the resources, protect and restore the aquatic environment, protect native and resident aquatic species and their habitat, and provide facilities and opportunities for recreational fishing.

Russell's PowerPoint presentation shared with us the various causes of the decline in the coral reef which mainly include sedimentation, invasive algae, grounding & anchor damage and general human interaction.

His presentation also depicted the differences between a healthy & disturbed reef and pointed out Maui's coral reef state & declining areas. Russell stressed that the reef cannot be rebuilt; only deterioration can be prevented.  To prevent the future declining of our coral reef, Russell encourages the regulation of fishing and promotes the education & awareness of those reef declining causes.

If you have any questions please contact the DAR at 808-587-0100 or by email at DLNR.aquatics@hawaii.gov.  The website is http://hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar/.

Please make plans to attend our next club meeting tomorrow on March 18th when we will have Carol Reimann - Executive Director Maui Hotel & Lodging Association as our guest speaker.

Our Guest Speaker was Jeff Hunt, the Director of the Maui County Department of Planning. The Department of Planning offers technical advice to the Mayor, County Council and commissions; proposes zoning legislation; drafts updates to the General Plan, Maui Island Plan and Community Plans; presents reports & recommendations on development proposals; and oversees programs on cultural resources, census and geographic information, flood plain permits and other special projects and permits.

Mr. Hunt's discussed primarily The Maui Island Plan which consists of recommendations from the General Plan Advisory Committee, Maui Planning Commission and Department of Planning.  The Maui County Council has one year to review the recommendations and approve a final Maui Island Plan (10/18/10). Once approved, the Maui Island Plan will be used by the County Council, Maui Planning Commission, County staff and the community as a policy foundation for day to day decision making.  The Maui Island Plan <
http://www.mauicounty.gov/../index.aspx?NID=1120>  will establish a pro-active planning process by establishing urban and rural growth areas that indicate where development is intended and will be supported.  Growth areas will provide for less costly services, reduced commuting, protection of community character and the preservation of agriculture, open space and cultural and natural resources.  It comprises goals, policies, programs and actions which are based on an assessment of current and future needs and available resources.  Once it has been adopted, the document becomes the principal tool for the County and its citizens to use when evaluating public and private projects and their impacts on land use, the economy, environment, infrastructure, and cultural resources.  For additional information and the 2009 Draft Maui County Plan please refer to the Maui County website at http://www.mauicounty.gov/index.aspx?NID=421.  Please see the attached for Mr. Hunt's presentation.

Please note that the previous two paragraphs were obtained from the Maui County website. I'm not that good of a writer.

Please make plans to attend our next Club Meeting tomorrow on February 4th when we will have Wendy MacDonald - Founder and CEO of Spectrum Solutionz as our guest speaker.
