At our club's meeting on December 2nd we had Gail Raikes - Executive Director - Nisei Veterans Memorial Center as our guest speaker.  The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center (NVMC) is a nonprofit organization, memorial, and community center with the mission of building a lasting tribute to the Nisei veterans of WWII.  The NVMC was formed in 1991 by representatives of all of the veterans organizations on Maui associated with Japanese Americans of WWII.  Although organized in 1991, its beginnings go back almost 30-years, when Leonard Oka founded Maui's Sons and Daughters of the 442, the first such organization in the nation.  Over the past 30-years a committed group of volunteers have been collecting interviews, artifacts, books and other reference material related to the Nisei veteran story.

The NVMC can be found over-looking Kahului Harbor, located on Kahului Beach Road as it becomes Lower Main Street.  The main building (Phase I), which was completed in 2006, includes the preschool and adult day care building.  Phase II, when completed, will be a 2,100 sq. ft. education building which will house the Nisei Veterans Archives, an extensive collection of books, oral histories, albums and photographs from World War II.  Phase II is expected to commence sometime in mid-2011.  Until this new education building completed, NVMC currently has a temporary office for its exhibits located in Kahului.

If you have any questions, would like to contact Gail or set up a time to view their current collections/exhibits please call her at (808) 244-6862.  For more information on The NVMC please visit their website at www.nvmc.org.

Our guest speaker was Elaine Slavinsky - Director - Alzheimer's Assoc. - Aloha Chapter.  Elaine shared with the club the statistics, symptoms and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.  Alzheimer's is a brain disease that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. The Alzheimer's Association works on a global, national and local level to enhance care and support for all those affected by Alzheimer's and related dementias.   The Association's mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

In the United States, 5.3 million people are living with Alzheimer's disease, and a new individual is diagnosed with the disease every 70 seconds. Unless something is done, by 2050, up to 16 million Americans will have Alzheimer's, and a new case will be diagnosed every 33 seconds.  Here are some other facts:

*      7th leading cause of death.

*      $172 billion in annual costs.

*      10.9 million unpaid caregivers.

*      One in eight people aged 65 and older (13 percent) have

Alzheimer's disease.

Please visit the association's website at http://www.alz.org/hawaii/ for more information on the statistics, symptoms, treatment and ways you can

contribute to help fight the disease.   If you have any questions,
